Kirk Nesset is a lifelong central Iowa resident dedicated to public service, responsible leadership, and practical problem-solving. A graduate of Ames High School and Iowa State University, Kirk lives in west Ames with his wife, Amy, who was born and raised in Maxwell.
Kirk earned degrees in History and Communication Studies from Iowa State University, where he developed a strong foundation in communication, critical thinking, and community engagement. Throughout his career, he has worked directly with people from a wide range of backgrounds in both education and public service roles.
For the past 4+ years, Kirk has served as a Field Appraiser for the City of Ames Assessor’s Office, where he has gained firsthand experience with property valuation, taxation, and the impact local government decisions have on residents and businesses.
Before joining the Assessor’s Office, Kirk worked in prevention and education programs focused on outreach, communication, and helping individuals navigate challenges and opportunities. He also taught English Language Learning (ELL) courses for Des Moines Area Community College for eight years at multiple campuses and correctional facilities, helping students from diverse cultural and professional backgrounds gain skills and move forward.
These experiences strengthened Kirk’s ability to communicate clearly, listen carefully, solve problems collaboratively, and work effectively with people from all walks of life, skills he believes are essential for responsive and accountable local government leadership.
In addition to his public sector experience, Kirk has owned and managed a diverse portfolio of investment properties for more than 12 years. Through hands-on oversight of budgeting, maintenance, tenant relations, and long-term planning, he has developed practical experience in financial management, responsible investment, and efficient operations. He has also operated a small lawn care business serving local families and businesses for more than 22 years.
Kirk is running for Story County Board of Supervisors because he believes the community deserves leadership that truly listens and delivers. He is focused on lowering property taxes, improving government efficiency, supporting local commerce, strengthening infrastructure, and ensuring taxpayer dollars are used wisely and transparently.
